More than the temple, the name Govardhan evokes the fond memories of little Krishna.
The divine lad lifted the then mighty Govardhan hills on his fingers. He used it as an umbrella to protect the people and the cattle of Bhrajbhoomi from the devastating rain sent by Lord Indra, which lasted for seven days.
Presently the small hill is known as Giriraj. The place is 20 kilometers from Mathura.
