The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga, known as Harshad Matha- the Goddess who spreads happiness all around.

According to the experts the temple structure dates back to 10nth century. Many others believe it was built during the reign of Bhoja-the Gurjjar ruler of the 9nth century.

The massive temple with amazing architecture is now in ruins; presently, under the control of Archeological Survey of India (ASI).

The village of Abhaneri in which the temple situates is also famous for Baoris or step wells, they are the unique invention of the natives for harvesting rain water. It also provide drinking water to the area.

The architecture and size of the wells are eye catching. Amongst the step wells, Chand Baori is the most popular one. This colossal step well is located in front of the Harshat Mata Temple. The huge tank with delicate carvings is certainly a delight to the eyes.

At present Abhaneri is a village 95 kilometers from Jaipur on the Agra-Jaipur road.
