Goddess Mahalasa is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini. The legend of Mohini is associated with the the story of Palazhimanthan (churning of the Sea) of Bhagavatha Purana.
As is in the case of other Hindu temples in Goa this one also had to shift from its original location due to Portuguese destruction.
The present temple is large structure judges by the Goan standard. Its huge temple bell and also the deepasthambha (the largest in the region) is also noteworthy.
Mahalasa is considered as the family deity of the many Gowda Saraswath Brahmins of the region. There are many temples dedicated to Goddess Mahalasa in the region and this temple at Mardol is considered prominent among them.
