A prominent centre of Vaishnavite movement in Karnataka.
The temple is made famous by Sri. Ramanucharya – the famous Vaishnavite saint.
It is believed, Sri. Ramanuja spent 12 years of his life at this temple. During this period the temple came to prominence as a Vaishnavite centre.
The Vairamudi Brahmotsava of this temple is famous in the region. During the festival a legendary diamond studded crown of Lord Vishnu of this temple is taken in ceremonial procession. Many gathers to get a glimpse of this crown during the procession. This festival is regarded as one of the four important festivals of the Vaishnavites (others are Garudotsav at Kanchipuram and Brhmotsava at Sri Rangam temple in Tamilnadu and Brahmotsav in Venkateswara Temple at Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh)
The Viramudi Brahmotsav lasts for 13 days. It usually falls in March-April every year.
Melkote is near Mandya town. It is 50 kilometers from Mysore.
